Kaylene Caswell Stocking

Graduate Fellow
Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Kaylene Caswell Stocking is a PhD candidate in electrical engineering and computer sciences, advised by Professor Claire Tomlin. Her research lies at the intersection of robotics, machine learning, and cognitive science. She is especially interested in understanding the kinds of representations that support generalization and learning about one's environment through interaction by both developing novel robotics algorithms inspired by what we know about how humans learn about the world, and by studying existing algorithms and their connections to the representations used by humans. Sophia Tomatz

Graduate Fellow
Department of Plant & Microbial Biology

Sophia Tomatz is a fourth year PhD candidate in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at UC Berkeley. She works in the lab of Markita Landry, where she studies applications of nanoparticles for delivery of biological cargos to plant systems for agricultural and gene editing applications. Sophia is interested in exploring the nexus between plant gene editing and agricultural systems. In particular, she looks to use her time as a Kavli Ethics, Science, and the Public Graduate Fellow to explore the intersection between academic spaces, international regulatory policies, and...

Martijn van der Meer

Visiting Graduate Student
Department of Medical Ethics, Philosophy and History of Medicine & Department of History; Erasmus University Rotterdam

Martijn van der Meer is a historian of science and medicine interested in how scientific knowledge shapes society. His research focuses on public health as an example of doing things together in modern societies, with case studies on vaccination, eugenics, and the ethical and historical dimensions of biomedical innovation. Martijn received training in the history and philosophy of science at Utrecht University and the University of Oxford, and in science and technology studies at the Dutch Graduate School for Science, Technology, and Modern Culture. Martijn has taught...
